Why are Politicians So Ignorant About Marijuana?

I got an interesting question from a fan on Facebook that I think is worthy of discussion.
Why is it that politicians act like they know everything about marijuana and cite completely false studies when they have never tried it?? They are completely against it when they know NOTHING about the plant or have likely never seen it in person. They continue to lie to the teeth about risks that do not exist and say that there are certain dangers to the public.

I see all the time about old farts saying they support medical marijuana in "oil, vapor, or edible form" but are against smoking it?? Our ancestors did not vaporize it, they smoked it and that's exactly how it should stay even for "medical" purposes.

To me it sounds like they just don't want anyone to get high even though we have rich billionaires snorting cocaine everyday. Why won't they just legalize it recreationally? I understand that it will cause massive losses to their pockets but we have every single right to smoke this plant to get high and they cannot control what we do. They are the real criminals.
There is a lot to consider here, but I think it boils down to two things about politicians: Who they are, and What they are.

Who They Are

Who is the average professional politician? He is a fairly old, very rich white guy. What does he know about marijuana? Nothing at all.

And who does he talk to everyday? Other extremely rich white guys. Marijuana is just not an issue these people care about. The only people in their orbit who even care about it probably benefit from prohibition. Lobbyists for the rehab industry, maybe.

Lastly, even those that are sympathetic to marijuana use know that it's not even a problem for them. If a member of a powerful family gets arrested for marijuana, what's going to happen? Exactly nothing.

What They Are

Politicians aren't seekers of truth or justice, they are seekers of power and money. There is nothing in it for them to actually LEARN about it's benefits and non-existent dangers.

And, a lot of them aren't actually very smart or curious about legitimate public policy issues. They get by with connections and superficial charm. They say and do what the money people tell them to say and do.

Agree, disagree?
